New York-based contemporary dance company KDNY is pleased to announce their 2013 Season, Gravity of Distraction. The delightful repertory evening includes three world premieres from choreographer Kathleen Dyer, the comical Gravity of Distraction and its upturned Distraction of Gravity, both set to original music by Cristina Spinei, and performed live by Cadillac Moon Quintet. Pianist Monica Horn provides animated accompaniment to Beethoven, further attracting, engaging and distracting the dancers in a playful and light-hearted manner. Gravity of Distraction will play three performances at The Ailey Citigroup Theater. Performances begin Thursday, May 2 and continue through Saturday, May 4.

Press are cordially invited: Thursday, May 2 at 7:30p.m.
(Press will be happily accommodated at any performance.)

Infused with a humorous choreographic approach, breathing fresh air into the modern dance world, Gravity of Distraction is the newest piece to debut as part of KDNY’s 15th Annual New York Season. This repertory evening will include live music from the Cadillac Moon Ensemble, with composition by Cristina Spinei, and the eight dancers of KDNY performing "Gravity of Distraction" and the invert, "Distraction of Gravity," as well as well-loved repertory pieces such as "Formula."

The Cadillac Moon Ensemble is comprised of Patty Kilroy on violin, Roberta Michel on flute, Meaghan Burke on cello, and Sean Statser on percussion.

Composer Cristina Spinei joins KDNY for the fifth consecutive year, and pianist Monica Horn will perform with the company for the first time since 2000 as she drives the humor in the angles and partnerships with Beethoven’s Rondo a Capriccio and Thirty-two Variations.

KDNY Dance creates rich theatrical experiences that celebrate, through craftsmanship, ingenuity, humor and beauty, the deep and powerful imagery of women. Based in New York, the all-female company led by choreographer Kathleen Dyer, has been described as "clean and sharp, sleek and stoic, a thrill to watch." (Dance Magazine) Since 1997, KDNY has performed a vast repertory of works that combine live original music with a movement vocabulary that is charged with athleticism and grace. Dyer's dynamic choreography takes inspiration from the potent stories of women from the historically significant to the everyday encounters. Through a fusion of technical virtuosity and idiosyncrasy, KDNY’s compelling company of women exemplify the multifaceted nature of the female spirit, at times confident yet vulnerable, graceful and empowered.

In addition to annual New York seasons, KDNY has toured regionally and internationally with repertory evenings, site-specific works, and exciting collaborations, creating master classes, community interactions, and outreach exchanges the way. The company has also performed in popular festivals including the Jacob’s Pillow Dance Festival, the NY International Fringe Festival, Philadelphia Fringe Festival, Joyce SoHo Presents, DanceNow, and the Edinburgh Fringe Festival. Ms. Dyer has received several artistic awards including an Artist Fellowships from the Connecticut Commission of the Arts. She continues to tour and teach in NY and locally through Arts for Learning of CT and has had her works staged on the regional ballet companies, including Alabama’s Huntsville Ballet and Florida’s Moving Current Dance Collective.

Gravity of Distraction is supported, in part, by the New York City Department of Cultural Affairs Cultural Development Fund. Performances will take place at The Ailey Citigroup Theater. Tickets are available online at Brown Paper Tickets.
