On March 29, fishbat, Inc., a social media agency, responds to a trending industry of “afterlife social media” as reported by NPR News. Companies like DeadSoci.al and _LivesOn offer social media services to loved ones of the deceased.

According to NPR, James Norris, founder of DeadSoci.al, got the idea after a prostate cancer commercial starring prostate victim and celebrity comedian Bob Monkhouse.

"Now people can extend their social legacy," Norris said. "This shouldn't be exclusive to celebrities that are of value."

_LivesOn, a collaboration between the Lean Mean Fighting Machine ad agency and Queen Mary, University of London was originally intended as a service for the living, reports NPR.

According to NPR, “A Twitter user could create a second identity (twittername_liveson) as a private account that would track the user's tweets online. As the second account came to know your habits, it would predict what you would favorite or retweet and do it for you. The idea is at the end of the day, you can log onto your _LivesOn and see the tweets that are most important to you.”

Dave Bedwood, creative partner for Lean Mean Fighting Machine stated that, "We're focused on the living, but (in theory) you might be able to create something for the dead."

NPR reports that “Facebook memorializes accounts of the deceased, while Twitter deactivates accounts upon receiving a death certificate from the immediate family or a person handling the estate. The U.S. government has updated its guidelines for writing a will with instructions about choosing someone you can trust to do what you wish with your social media accounts when you're gone.”

CEO Clay Darrohn speaks to this industry as a morbid and exploitative approach to social media. “Social media is about 'the now' and what is happening in real-time. Memorials for those who have passed are acceptable and should be respected. But, as the leading social media agency on Long Island, it is our professional opinion that we should leave social media to the living and let go of those who have parted from this plane of existence.”
