On March 25, Linus Bike offers a statement in response to an article posted by the Post-Gazette detailing plans for a bike sharing program projected to launch in Pittsburgh by the spring of 2014.

The Post-Gazette article explains that the city of Pittsburgh is aiming to set up a bike sharing program akin to those that have been established in cities such as Barcelona, Washington D.C., and London’s Hyde Park. It is reported that current plans include a citywide system complete with 500 city bikes and 50 stations.

Pittsburgh mayor Luke Ravenstahl believes that the bike sharing program will provide an incentive for talented youth to stay in the city. Participation in the program is flexible, with daily, monthly, or yearly memberships available. Infrastructure such as bike lanes are said to be a growing presence within the city in order to present a viably safe option for bikers to ride around the city without contending with sharing busy lanes with vehicles.

The article claims that a high percentage of urban commuters use methods of transport other than personal vehicles. Those that commute by alternate means have become the target candidates for using the bike sharing program because of the intention to use the bikes for point-to-point transport rather than joy riding or exercising.

China Reevers, Linus Bike representative, speaks in favor of Pittsburgh’s bike sharing program. “Commuting in an urban setting can pose a lot of obstacles. Traffic is typically bad when commuting to work is necessary and the frustration of densely packed roads is hard to avoid. I believe that the large percentage of those finding other means to move around the city really speaks to the latent potential for success that this proposed bike sharing system will have.”
