PFLAG National's Straight for Equality in Entertainment Award Honoree, Sir Patrick Stewart

“I am delighted and honored to receive this PFLAG Straight for Equality in Entertainment Award. From my earliest years as an actor I have always been proud of the support the creative community gives to all forms of human and civil rights.

Washington, D.C. (PRWEB) March 25, 2013

PFLAG National—the nation's largest grassroots-based non-profit for families, friends, and straight allies of gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender (GLBT) people—will honor Sir Patrick Stewart with the Straight for Equality in Entertainment award at the fifth annual Straight for Equality Awards Gala. At the event, which will be hosted by comedian/writer/producer Lizz Winstead, PFLAG National will also honor NFL players Brendon Ayanbadejo and Chris Kluwe, author John Irving, and Whirlpool Corporation.

“From breaking through the ‘don’t play gay’ barrier with roles in Jeffrey, Frasier and now his upcoming film Match to his unwavering support for putting an end to violence against women, Sir Patrick Stewart is an ideal honoree,” said PFLAG National Executive Director Jody M. Huckaby. “His roles in both X-Men and Star Trek: The Next Generation—two franchises which have touched on themes such as the damage done by discrimination and the hurt inflicted by exclusion—have sent uncompromising messages to viewers, particularly GLBT youth, who have found themselves feeling hopeless and without allies.”

Straight for Equality—a national outreach and education project created by PFLAG National— focuses on the next generation of straight allies joining together with GLBT people in the effort to achieve equality for all. Straight for Equality Awards are presented to individuals who are transforming the way that GLBT people are understood and treated, using their talents and platforms in their respective fields to empower others to become engaged and outspoken allies for GLBT equality.

Of accepting the award, Stewart said, “I am delighted and honored to receive this PFLAG Straight for Equality in Entertainment Award. From my earliest years as an actor I have always been proud of the support the creative community gives to all forms of human and civil rights.”

The Fifth Annual Straight for Equality Awards Gala will be held on Thursday, April 4th in New York City at the Marriott Marquis Times Square. Tickets are available by visiting http://www.straightforequality.org/2013gala.
