On March 27, 2013, Colle Farmers Market releases a statement following a Valley Courier article by Lauren Krizansky regarding commercial organic egg production being established in certain parts of Colorado.

According to the Valley Courier article, the first organic egg farm being established “would be a phased build out of 10,000 Bovan Brown hens,” needing 1.75 square-feet for each bird and five square-feet in outdoor access for each bird as well. Plans include a 17,500 square-feet barn with 1.15 acre pasture area. The total barn and pasture area would take up 1.55 acres.

The article reports that “The Colorado Department of Agriculture (USDA) will certify the hen housing and pasture, and it will also meet Organic Valley Co-op specifications, according to the Saguache County permit application. The hens will not be confined to cages, but rather allowed to “free range” inside the barn and outdoors in the pasture comprised of native grasses and alfalfa.”

The article reports that the flock will eat certified organic feed, and believe the hens will consume about a total of 480 gallons of water a day. Organic Valley Co-op, the company behind the organic farming project will market the eggs and send them to their Denver location for grading.

A representative from Colle Farmers Market commented on the organic egg farm project. “It’s a great move in the right direction for organic farming. Setting up a farm like this will hopefully help get organic eggs out to a larger area, and help spread the idea of healthier eating and sustainability. One of the hardest things about switching to organic food can be finding a local store that sells organic products in any kind of substantial variety. Organic egg farms such as this one help make it easier for people to shop organic.”
