On March 29, Natalie Sexenian, the marketing manager for extra virgin olive oil manufacturer Bellucci Premium, responds to a CBS News article regarding the relationship between cancer prevention and maintaining a healthy heart.
According to CBS News, a new study conducted by Northwestern University found that lowering the risk of cancer starts with taking care of your heart. The study revealed that people who follow the American Heart Association’s (AHA) “Life’s Simple 7” guidelines to lowering the risk of heart disease actually reduce their risk of cancer.
CBS News reports that the study examined over 13,000 Americans in a 20-plus year study. The study, which was published in the AHA’s journal Circulation, found that participants who followed six or seven of the steps cut their risk of heart disease in half. Those who adhered to fewer steps reduced their cancer risk by only 33 percent.
“Recent studies show that olive oil significantly reduces the risk for high blood pressure, high cholesterol and heart disease,” Sexenian says. “It’s one of the main components of the popular Mediterranean diet, which is high in oleic acid and monounsaturated fats.”
Sexenian adds that the heart benefits of olive oil may contribute to cancer prevention. “These fats lower blood pressure and keep cholesterol levels at a healthy balance. Consuming a regular amount of olive oil and incorporating into your diet could help you avoid cancer. Who knew good health could be as easy as pouring olive oil?”
