With so many senior living options available, knowing which one is right can be a daunting task for seniors and their families.
Marshfield, MA (PRWEB) March 29, 2013
Village at Proprietors Green, a senior living community with a continuum of care in Marshfield, MA, held a free, educational forum recently to help consumers understand the right time to access the many available senior living, housing and healthcare options. According to a new U.S. Census Bureau report, there are now more Americans age 65 or older than at any other time in U.S. history. The Census Bureau estimates that the elderly population will more than double between now and the year 2050, to 80 million.
With so many senior living options available, knowing which one is right can be a daunting task for seniors and their families. Seniors and family members who attended the presentation asked questions such as:
- Where and when do I begin my search?
- Mom has Alzheimer’s, when is it time to consider a memory care unit?
- What types of patients are admitted to skilled nursing centers for either short-term or
The panel, given by Colleen Ferguson, executive director of Village at Proprietors Green; Nancy Zappolo, RN, BNS, CCM, director of case management, Welch Healthcare and Retirement Group; and Meg Doherty, RN, ANP, MBA, and CEO, Norwell VNA and Hospice, stressed the importance of planning ahead for future care needs should a sudden change in a loved one’s physical or cognitive capability occur. The first and often most difficult step is knowing when to talk to a parent about the different senior living options.
Welch Healthcare and Retirement Group offers:
- Adult Day Health Care
- Alzheimer’s and Memory Care
- Assisted Living
- Home Health Care
- Independent Living
- Short-term Rehabilitation
- Skilled Nursing Care
It’s never too early to know the options for in-home care and alternative care arrangements. Often when an older adult leaves the hospital following surgery they are unable to go home alone. Families must make quick decisions to determine whether short-term rehabilitation at a skilled nursing center is a better option than going home with services. Following rehabilitation, often a transition to assisted living is a good choice - if only for a short stay. This allows an older adult to sample the lifestyle while receiving the personal care that may be needed.
