Boldly going where no Startup Weekend has gone before...

The Space industry faces some big challenges in the next hundred years or so. We think we can solve some of those in 54 hours.

San Francisco, CA (PRWEB) March 30, 2013

Global phenomenon Startup Weekend is holding its first event focused exclusively on the emerging space industry: ‘Startup Weekend: SPACE’, is coming to San Francisco May 31st - June 2nd 2013.

Organized by leaders from the Space Frontier Foundation, Mavericks Civilian Space Foundation, Silicon Valley Space Center, Webfund, and I Dream of Space, the goal of Startup Weekend: Space is to bring together entrepreneurial minds from Silicon Valley and beyond to tackle some of the final frontiers biggest challenges, and form new companies around them.

Startup Weekends are weekend-long, hands-on experiences where entrepreneurs and aspiring entrepreneurs can find out if startup ideas are viable; over 1000 Startup Weekends have taken place around the globe, with hundreds more currently in the planning phase. Developers, designers, marketers, product managers and startup enthusiasts come together to share ideas, form teams, build products, launch startups and compete for prizes in 54 high-energy hours. Anyone looking to test the entrepreneurial waters is welcome, however the experience is especially useful to entrepreneurs interested in receiving feedback on an idea, looking for a co-founder, or who want to learn new skills.

Startup Weekend: SPACE will take place at the Hacker Dojo - 599 Fairchild Dr. in Mountain View, CA. Registration covers the cost of instruction, mentorship, and seven locally prepared meals; early bird and student discounts are available, so the cost is $49-$99 for the full weekend. Participants must register by May 1st for the early bird discount: (http://space.startupweekend.org/)

Reuben Metcalfe is the founder of I Dream of Space, a startup using a consumer-internet model to generate demand for the space industry, and chairs the Startup Weekend: SPACE Committee. “Startup Weekends are risk-free environments where everyone is expected to roll up their sleeves and dive into the exhilarating world of startups,” says Metcalfe. “It's now been over half a century since people started promising the "space age" was just around the corner. We’d like to bring people together to find ways we can deliver on that promise.”

Startup Weekend SPACE is sponsored by Google, Microsoft and Amazon. For more information and the online application, visit http://space.startupweekend.org/.
