On April 1, mattress delivery company Online Bed Quilt recommends tips for a good night’s sleep for those suffering from wakefulness.
According to The Exponent Telegram, many adults suffer from wakefulness in the middle of the night. The article says the difficulty lies in staying asleep, not falling asleep. About 30 percent of adults get less than six hours of sleep per day, resulting in the use of sleep aids reports The Exponent Telegram.
Justin Maas, a representative from mattress sale company Online Bed Quilt, says sleeping pills could have severe negative effects on alertness in the morning. “The FDA has already warned people of the dangers of sleep aids,” he says. “You shouldn’t take any of those pills unless you are going to be sleeping for at least eight hours. If you want to fall asleep, but you are only going to be sleeping for six hours, you could wake up feeling sluggish and groggy. This could actually impair driving skills and limit productivity at work.”
In an effort to deter people from using sleep aids too often, Maas reveals tips that can be used to promote better sleep habits and keep you from waking up in the middle of the night:
- Design your bedroom like sleep palace- A bedroom is the most important space for sleeping. You have to make sure you design and decorate the room to promote sleep. That means it should be dark at night. You want to block out light from waking you in the night and also make sure noise is minimized.
- Update your mattress- Mattresses are extremely important. A lot of people that suffer from sleep problems are not using the proper mattress. Mattresses should be replaced every 6-8 years. Some people continue using mattresses long after that, which causes back pain and other sleep-related problems. This could contribute to midnight wakefulness. Test out new mattresses at the store and make sure your spine is aligned when you sleep.
- Limit caffeine intake- Caffeine can keep you up and wake you up in the middle of the night, Maas says. So it’s important to avoid that nightly cup of coffee before you go to bed. “Try drinking that coffee a few hours earlier so the caffeine leaves your system before you try falling asleep,” Maas says. It will also prevent having to use the bathroom in the middle of the night.
- Avoid electronics- Gadgets and cell phones emit blue light, which is horrible for trying to fall asleep. Your brain won’t be able to turn off because the light signals daytime which will keep you alert, making it harder to stay asleep.
