Having commenced in 2002, AlMaghrib Institute has now officially passed its 10 year anniversary and become the leading Islamic Institute teaching premiere Islamic education to the largest student body in the western world. Founded by Shaykh Muhammad Alshareef, a Madinah University graduate who dreamt of a way to teach classical Islamic studies in a way that was fun, social, spiritual, engaging and still remain academic.

Year by year, the bar was raised on how knowledge is not only sought, but loved. Glossy full colour posters and movie style trailers created a hype around Islamic knowledge that had never existed before. These double weekend degree-level seminars began in the US and Canada, and eventually spread infectiously around the globe resulting in the launch of AlMaghrib Institute in countries all over the West and the East, including the UK, Ireland, Malaysia, Singapore, Indonesia and the UAE.

Upon seeing the success, enthusiasm and devotion towards weekend seminars, AlMaghrib Institute introduced new programmes providing the opportunity of seeking Islamic knowledge to a variety of audiences. ‘Ilmfest, the festival of knowledge, is a travelling one day conference which consistently sells out arenas and convention centres around the world. Likewise, ‘ilmsummit, the annual knowledge retreat allows more serious students of knowledge a chance at intensive study, living and learning with their instructors for an extended period of time.

Over the last decade, AlMaghrib Institutes’ students have consistently gone beyond classroom expectations, by practically looking at ways to implement the knowledge they so passionately learned. In Houston Texas, a group of inspired students created “Al-Amaanah,” an organization servicing refugees and new immigrants after they lessons they received in their studies of the Qu’ran. In Bradford UK, students pledged to support local soup kitchens in collaborations with other faith based groups, and worldwide AlMaghrib Institute students have consistently united to participate in various fundraising initiatives for major disaster relief programs, providing millions of dollars to those in need when they needed it most.

Nonetheless, the success of an organization is not measured in years but in decades, and as AlMaghrib Institute finishes its first decade of revolutionising studies in Islamic Sciences, many new and exciting opportunities have yet to be discovered. As we make way for our first graduating class, we also open the doors for many more to join through continual international expansions. The AlMaghrib endowment fund will help to ensure long term sustainability, with eventual plans for a full-time seminary which will act as the premier learning hub in the Western World.
