Detroit Metropolitan Airport’s New Play Area is Big Hit with Children and Parents

Long before other airports were thinking about ways to entertain their youngest flyers, DTW had cordoned off spaces for children and filled them with toys. Now, the airport boasts a brand-new indoor play area, sponsored by Aquafina and created by PLAYTIME.

It’s nice for parents traveling with children to have a safe place for their kids to burn off some energy before embarking on a long flight.

Detroit Metropolitan Airport (DTW) has always been ahead of the curve when it comes to providing play experiences for children on its terminals, says Scott Wintner, Public Affairs Manager, Wayne County Airport Authority. Now, thanks to sponsor Aquafina and play area company PLAYTIME, the airport has a brand-new indoor playground for its youngest travelers.

“Air travel is exciting for kids,” says Wintner. “You’re six miles up in the air, traveling at 600 miles an hour and two hours later, you come down in a new place. Kids can be really amped up. It makes total sense to provide an outlet for all of that excitement.”

Therefore, when Aquafina stepped up to sponsor a play area in the airport’s North Terminal, Wintner said the airport quickly agreed.

“We know that traveling with kids can be a cumbersome experience,” explains Wintner. “An airport is a unique environment. It’s not necessarily boring like a doctor’s waiting room, but there’s actually so much stimulation that it can make parenting difficult. Kids can certainly find plenty to occupy themselves with in an airport but those are not usually the things that parents necessarily want their kids playing with!”

The new soft play area occupies a vacant space where a concessionaire would normally go. It’s a small footprint, but very popular.

“It’s been a big success,” says Wintner. “It’s not only a safe play area that’s aviation-themed to capture the day’s excitement, but it also allows Aquafina to share some of their important recycling messages.”

The play area was designed, manufactured and installed by PLAYTIME, LLC. PLAYTIME is the global provider of unique, interactive, soft play areas and playground equipment for indoor, outdoor and water play.

Wintner says that the indoor play area has been such a success that they are now exploring ways to install one in their busier, McNamara Terminal.

“It’s nice for parents traveling with children to have a safe place for their kids to burn off some energy before embarking on a long flight,” says Tom Naughton, Wayne County Airport Authority CEO.
