Choral groups from seven area colleges and high schools will perform in a new event at the Gallo Center for the Arts at 5:30 pm on Sunday, April 28. The event, "Cappella Palooza!", features a program that is fully
a cappella, meaning written for voices only, without instrumental accompaniment.

Tickets range in price from $8 to $20, and may be purchased online at GalloArts.org, by calling 209-338-2100, or at the Gallo Center ticket office, 1000 I Street in downtown Modesto. Organized groups of 15 people or more receive a 15% discount on ticket prices. Group sales information is available by calling 209-339-5062.

"Cappella Palooza! is believed to be the first event of its kind in this part of the Central Valley," said Richard Colla, who helped organize the festival and directs the concert choir at Modesto Junior College. "We delighted to be able to bring the program to the Gallo Center."

Schools participating in the festival are Central Valley High School, California State University-Stanislaus, Enochs High School, Johansen High School, Modesto Junior College, Pittman High School, Downey High School and Turlock High School.

Singing a cappella is musically challenging, requiring advanced aural skills (listening) and a heightened sense of ensemble (teamwork). There are many styles of a cappella choral music, from medieval chant to Renaissance motets and Elizabethan madrigals to vocal jazz and the popular show choir productions of today. The pieces for this debut program were selected by each conductor to suit the experience level and genre preference of each choir.

Boyett Petroleum is the Gallo Center's 2012-2013 Premier Partner.
