KALULU Launches African-Inspired Kikoy Children's Wear Collection With Charity Trunk Show in NYC

The New York kids’ fashion brand has pledged 5% of proceeds from its trunk show event to education charity SCALEAfrica

Brooklyn-based children’s wear brand Kalulu has chosen to celebrate its launch with a charity trunk show and brunch on April 14th. The event will debut Kalulu’s range of high-quality children’s clothes made from East African kikoy cloth. The brand has pledged 5% of proceeds from launch event sales to SCALEAfrica, a Brooklyn charity working to design and construct schools across sub-Saharan Africa.

Kalulu is a new brand that brings together traditional African textiles and American design and manufacture. Distinctive kikoy cloth, woven from 100% cotton is used to produce a range of stylish, hard-wearing children’s wear that softens with each wash. Kalulu is available in sizes 2T – 10 for both girls and boys.

The launch event takes place at Double Knot in Tribeca and offers attendees a chance to purchase items from the upcoming season. 5% of all proceeds from the trunk show will be donated to Kalulu’s partner organization, SCALEAfrica. Founded in 2008, SCALEAfrica seeks to address poverty in sub-Saharan Africa by designing and constructing schools across the region. Central to this approach is SCALEAfrica’s belief that education is a human right, not a privilege – a view shared by Kalulu founder, Milbert Kiggundu-Bentham.

“Whether you’re talking about New York or Mfuwe in Zambia, no child should be denied access to a proper education,” says Kiggundu-Bentham. “And that’s why we’re so pleased to partner with SCALEAfrica, not just for this event but on a long-term basis. Kalulu is all about connectedness – world citizenship and shared responsibility. This is our way of giving something back to Africa, right from the outset.”

The launch event on April 14th will take the form of a trunk show and brunch from 11am until 2pm at Double Knot, 13 White St., New York. Items in the Kalulu collection will be available from $24.00.

ABOUT KALULU
Kalulu is the product of Milbert Kiggundu Bentham’s East African childhood, and her current life as a New York mother of three. ‘Hare’ in English, Kalulu takes its name from the mischievous character found throughout East African folklore. Far from simply borrowing from Africa though, the ethical clothing company proactively gives back to the continent.
