On April 1, 2013, Colle Farmers Market offers commentary based on an article published by the Cleveland Advocate discussing the use of compost as a method to enhance organic farming.
The Cleveland Advocate article written by Robert Hoffman introduces the concept of creating compost to enhance farming practices as dating back as far back as the existence of the Akkadian Empire. However, he notes that the use of compost is a means to ensure larger yields and tasty produce.
Hoffman outlines a procedure to cultivate high-quality compost. He recommends that compost is best prepared with a 4 x 4 box and filled with organic materials. The ideal ratio is reported to be two thirds plant product, with the remaining third consisting of animal waste. A regular water regimen and rotation are said to aid the breakdown of the waste and ultimately produce material like black earth.
Hoffman claims that compost stands apart from some uses of fresh animal manure because “fruits, vegetables, and flowers, recharged by the forces in compost produce plentiful growth and fruiting in plants.”
The article states that, because of its natural derivative, compost is a quality choice for organic farming. Using materials that would otherwise be little more than natural waste are converted into a sustainable source of production.
Colle Farmers Market issues a statement in support of using compost as an organic fertilizer. A spokesperson from Colle points out that recycling materials “such as unused or discarded vegetation” is an ideal way to replenish the health of soil. “A hardy compost, made with a variety of plant and animal matter, would be a prime choice in providing all the nutrients necessary for fruitful raising of produce,” says the Colle rep.
