Classic Rock: Rental Company Helps Dallas Race Hit All the Right Notes

More than 14,000 runners fought the chill to compete in the fourth annual run of Rock ‘n’ Roll Dallas, part of a multi-city marathon series that crisscrosses the country. Ducky-Bob’s Event Specialists crisscrossed the route with tenting and entertainment spots to support the brave runners.

Hitting the pavement mile after mile, runners need as much motivation as possible, especially with the type of inclement weather that hit Dallas the weekend of March 23rd and 24th. The Rock ’n’ Roll Marathon Series was just the thing to keep the runners moving, and Ducky-Bob’s Event Specialists, a Classic Party Rentals company, were just the trusted partners to make sure nobody got too cold.

The Rock ’n’ Roll Marathon Series /Dallas Half Marathon Relay draws over 14,000 participants to run like the wind, in this case run against the wind, through downtown, picturesque uptown neighborhoods, and on to the finish line in historic Fair Park, site of the great State Fair of Texas. The difference between this and other half marathons is that bands play on stages spread throughout the route. The run, mounted by event producers Competitor Group Inc, is celebrating its fourth year in Dallas, and its fourth year with Ducky-Bob’s providing tents and other rental equipment along the route.

Event planners create a welcoming race course staging local entertainment at 11 locations, culminating at a main stage bonanza with refreshments, food trucks and vendor areas to keep the energy going. More than 300 tables for registration, refreshments and vendors are distributed throughout the route. More than 30 individual tents were erected, covering over 13, 000 square feet. Both water barrel weights and stake-anchoring methods were used to safely secure the tents along the 13-mile course.

The song most requested on Sunday the 24th might well have been the Rolling Stones’ “Gimme Shelter.” Early morning 40 degree temperatures and grey skies made for added incentives to get to the finish line in a hurry. The tents provided shelter for the 40 mph gusting winds, rather than shade as in the past.

Classic and Ducky-Bob’s may have been in their fourth year supporting the run, but that doesn’t mean the rental company has rested on its laurels. Once the ground work was laid in 2010, it’s been a matter of making adjustments to the route and learning to manage and accommodate the crowds, both runners and cheering fans and on-lookers. This year, starting line installations also had to be scheduled around another city event that planned to draw 10,000 participants on the plaza starting line.

“The Ducky-Bob's team took a creative approach for the marathon this year,” says Leslie Malcolm, Senior Event Account Manager for Ducky-Bob’s. “We decided to have one designated event manager at each location – route, start line and finish line – as well as a mobile command center. The result: great communication, teamwork and the ultimate win-win!”

The two-day event also features a number of Saturday activities, including a “Kids Rock” series for children. Next up for the Competitor Group’s Rock ‘n’ Roll Marathon Series is San Francisco on April 7 and Nashville on April 27.

Ron Sericati, Classic’s Event Manager for all the stops of the Rock ‘n’ Roll Marathon Series, was especially impressed by the way the Ducky-Bob’s team responded to race challenges. “Although each event varies in size, Classic Party Rentals has been a strong partner in helping to produce each event,” says Sericati.
