Talk about a royal pedigree. The Lion King story is based on influences from Shakespeare and the Bible.

The play is based on the Academy Award-winning 1994 Disney movie, now the highest-grossing hand-drawn film in history. And the musical itself, after opening in 1997, won six Tony Awards, including Best Musical; and, as of last year, it became the highest grossing Broadway show of all time.

The Broadway production, currently at the Minskoff, performed to 100.4 percent capacity with a total of 13,467 patrons for eight performances in the week ending March 24, according to statistics compiled by entertainment-link.com. Only Motown: The Musical and The Book of Mormon ranked higher in capacity for the period.

At the same time, the traveling production at the Orpheum Theatre in Omaha, Nebraska is enjoying a successful run as well. The cast wraps on April 7 and moves on to the Fox Cities Performing Arts Center in Appleton, Wisconsin from April 9 through May 5.

Next is the Tennessee Performing Arts Center in Nashville, Tennessee, with opening night set for May 7, 2013.

In terms of reviews, both the Broadway and traveling productions have garnered almost universal critical praise for their powerful mixture of theatre traditions from around the world. Broadway critics give the play a 4.7 out of five, one of their highest ratings.

“The Lion King continues to attract audiences on Broadway and in its traveling productions,” said Felina Martinez at online ticket marketplace BuyAnySeat.com. “While most performances begin to sell out closer to showtime, we still have a great inventory of tickets available.”

“In fact, we’re proud to be able to offer theatre-goers the most complete selection of The Lion King tickets, with a worry-free guarantee to protect their purchase,” said Martinez.

Originally released as an animated musical adventure movie by Walt Disney in 1994, The Lion King has earned over $951 million worldwide as of 2011 and is the highest-grossing hand-drawn film in history. The movie won two Academy Awards in music and a Golden Globe Award for Best Motion Picture, with its songs written by composer Elton John and lyricist Tim Rice, with an original score by Hans Zimmer.

The current Broadway adaptation opened in October of 1997, and won six Tony Awards, including Best Musical. It is now the fifth longest-running Broadway show in history. Also, as of April 2012, it is the highest grossing Broadway show of all time, with over $853.8 million in receipts. (Source: Wikipedia.org)

Directed by Julie Taymor, the brightly plumed musical paints a dreamscape of jungle characters in animal costumes as well as giant, hollow puppets. Then there’s Hans Zimmer's Oscar-winning score and Lebo M's outstanding choral arrangements. Plus, there’s Elton John and Tim Rice's hit songs, including "Circle of Life, "Hakuna Matata," "I Just Can't Wait to Be King," and "Can You Feel the Love Tonight.”

And, of course, there’s the story. Inspired by influences from the biblical tales of Joseph and Moses, and plays Hamlet and Macbeth by William Shakespeare, it tells of the trials of Simba, a young lion who is to take his father Mufasa's place as king. However, after his uncle Scar kills Mufasa, Simba must stop his uncle from conquering the Pride Lands and avenge his father.

One critic wrote, “So simple, and yet with its strange mix of old-time Broadway showmanship and Natural History Museum grandeur, this one-of-a-kind extravaganza manages to stir the dreams of both the father and the five year-old.”
