Natchitoches, LA (PRWEB) April 22, 2013
The weather is getting warmer and for riders all across the country that can only mean one thing: riding season is officially here. While motorcycles bring excitement and thrill to riders and are a very popular hobby, they can also be quite dangerous. In fact, on average, three motorcyclists are killed every single day in the United States, as reported by the Motorcycle Safety Foundation.
While many times motorcycle accidents are not the fault entirely of the rider, it is important for a rider to pay attention to safety precautions. For motorists, seeing riders on the road might be normal, but that does not mean they are prepared to share the road safely. And since 48% of fatal accidents occur at intersections, an awareness of surroundings is imperative to safety. At Cunningham Financial Group, the local agents want to be sure all Louisiana residents are safe and secure on the road.
Before hitting the road, and of course, on the road, keep these tips in mind:
Before hitting the open roads you want to be sure to take care of some maintenance:
•Check to be sure that the lights, brakes and turn signals are all properly working
•Monitor and maintain the oil and fuel tanks and their appropriate levels
•Be sure the mirrors are all properly functioning
•Review the condition of all of your riding gear. You want to be sure that your helmet still fits you snugly and properly, and that your clothing is not in poor condition. Leather will keep you the safest in the event of a fall.
•Review your motorcycle insurance policy to be sure it is up to date with any changes you made to your bike during the winter season.
Once you hit the road, always remember:
•ALWAYS wear your helmet. In the event of an accident, you want to keep your head and neck protected.
•Obey to the posted speed limits.
•Avoid any roadside distractions. This includes all of the common distractions you face in your car, too – cell phones, GPS systems, your radio, etc.
•Don’t weave in and out of traffic or dive in blind spots – the more visible you are to other motorists, the safer you are.
Remember, as a rider, you are the most important person responsible for your safety. There are plenty of courses available and riders are encouraged to find one in the Louisiana area through the MSF website.
