The Braun Corporation is nearing completion of an order from the Saudi Arabian Ministry of Social Affairs to supply 3,000 wheelchair lifts to the Kingdom – the largest single order of mobility equipment in the industry’s history. The order, which will take just seven months to fulfill, reflects a changing attitude toward accessible transportation globally.
"The demand for accessible transportation is not limited to the United States,” said Nick Gutwein, President of Braun Corporation. “When our founder built his first wheelchair lift in 1968, he had no idea that his innovation would revolutionize public transportation not just in America, but across the globe.”
The lifts are distributed through Braun’s international partner, Autoadapt, a Sweden-based adaptive equipment company, and will be installed on Ford E Series chassis supplied by Al Jazirah Ford in Riyadh. A Saudi-based vehicle conversion company, Skan International, will install the Braun VL998 lifts and corresponding raised door kits.
The Saudi Arabian Ministry of Social Affairs awarded the bid in an effort to ensure safe and accessible transportation for citizens with physical disabilities. Last month representatives from Braun and Autoadapt traveled to Riyadh to provide installation, operation and maintenance support to the Saudi partners.
As the demand for mobility products increases worldwide, Braun and Autoadapt are positioned to provide dependable, accessible transportation to all corners of the globe. “These vehicles will have a very positive impact on the day to day life for the users. Helping people with disabilities live more independently always comes first to us and we’re proud to be part of this,” says Peter Wahlsten, Executive Vice President of Autoadapt.
About Braun Corporation
Braun Corporation is the largest manufacturer of wheelchair accessible vans, ramps, and wheelchair lifts worldwide and enables people with physical disabilities to regain mobility and lead active and independent lives. The Indiana-based company was founded by Ralph Braun, who was diagnosed with spinal muscular atrophy at a young age and unable to walk by age 15. Ralph was motivated by his disability to invent the world’s first electric scooter (the Tri-Wheeler) and wheelchair lift (the Lift-A-Way) in his parents’ garage. Word spread and demand for the product increased, resulting in the birth of Save-A-Step Manufacturing, which ultimately became BraunAbility. The company offers the most diverse line of vehicle platforms in the industry, including the most popular minivan models from Dodge/Chrysler, Honda, and Toyota.
