Massachusetts Issues Medical Advisory Regarding Da Vinci Robotic Surgery Complications
In the last two years, the Massachusetts Board of Registration in Medicine has received “an increased number” of reports of patient injury and complications regarding Da Vinci robot assisted surgeries, causing the state Board to issue an advisory calling for better robotic surgery training and for patients to be better informed regarding the risks associated with the robotic surgical complications.
The advisory included three cases of Da Vinci robot surgical complications that caused serious injury to the patients. The first case involved a patient who underwent a Da Vinci robotic hysterectomy and sustained severe injury including significant sigmoid colon damage, left ureter dissection, and a cautery injury along the pelvic wall requiring reparative surgery. A second patient underwent a robot assisted hysterectomy during which physicians had to convert to a laparoscopic procedure causing the patients to remain in position on the table for 210 minutes causing nerve damage to the area near the neck and shoulder. Physicians in a third case left rectal tissue in the abdomen of a patient, which was not seen during the Da Vinci robot assisted sweep prior to closing the incision. That patient had to undergo corrective surgery the following day.
