On April 6, Spartan Race offers a full warrior welcome to UFC lightweight Jaime Varner, who will be participating today in the Reebok Spartan Race in Las Vegas.

According to the Spartan blog, Jamie Varner will be taking part in the first-ever Reebok Spartan Race held in Las Vegas. The 28-year-old Varner is “recovering from a hand injury that has kept him out of action since his UFC 155 victory over Melvin Guillard and will be facing his first, but not last, Spartan Race course.”

Although Varner is new to obstacle course racing and mud running, he is no stranger to physical challenges. “I’m a competitive person. I fight people for a living!” Varner said in his interview with the Spartan Race blog, “I was medically cleared two weeks ago and this gives me motivation to train. It’s a different kind of motivation and that’s exciting.”

When asked if he was nervous about race day, Varner mentioned that he is no stranger to intense competition. “I don’t have to worry about someone punching me in the face, but it is a bit more mileage than I’m used to running. That might be the only thing in the back of my mind.”

Varner has added more mileage to his regular training regime in preparation for the obstacle course race, reports Spartan Race. “I added more aerobic conditioning with long runs,” said Varner. “I’m most looking forward to the finish line!”

Varner also told Spartan Race that he is proud of his Greek heritage, and that Spartan Race is right up his alley as he sports a Spartan inspired tattoo on his arm. “My great-grandmother moved to the US from Sparta. This race is so fitting! To be in Vegas and do the event makes me proud to represent my family and my origin.”

“We are excited to have Jamie run our race and we look forward to seeing him at the finish line,” Spartan Race founder Joe De Sena comments. “UFC fighters are the embodiment of the Spartan warrior spirit and we hope to hear a bellowing warrior cry after he finishes.”
