DALLAS (PRWEB) April 09, 2013
The mesothelioma law firm of Baron and Budd applauds U.S Attorney General Regina Benjamin for publicly stating that there is no level of asbestos exposure known to be completely safe. This public statement comes at an opportune time, as this week is National Asbestos Awareness Week (NAAW) as decreed by Senate Resolution 66. Baron and Budd is glad that the U.S. Surgeon General has publicly recognized the unacceptable dangers that asbestos poses on the national public.
“U.S. Surgeon General Benjamin’s statement comes at a time when our nation needs to be aware of the dangers of asbestos more than ever,” says Russell Budd, president and managing shareholder of Baron and Budd. “Asbestos patients and their families have suffered enough. It’s time we ban asbestos in the United States and worldwide.”
Unfortunately, many people in the United States do not know that asbestos is not banned. The Asbestos Disease Awareness Organization (ADAO), along with several other asbestos advocacy groups, have been working to educate the public on the dangers of asbestos and encourage others to ask their congress members to ban the carcinogen. U.S. Surgeon General Benjamin’s statement is a huge step toward achieving this goal.
More than 10,000 U.S. citizens die each year from asbestos disease, according to ADAO. The toxic fibers are known to cause fatal diseases such as mesothelioma and asbestos lung cancer. These diseases are completely preventable by halting asbestos imports and using safe alternatives in their place.
According to the United States Geological Survey, over 1000 tons of asbestos were imported into the U.S. in 2012. And worse, the report shows that over two percent of the imported product is being used in unknown sources. In light of the U.S. Surgeon General’s statement, we now have federal support that the use of asbestos is unacceptable and could lead to asbestos disease.
The mesothelioma law firm of Baron and Budd has been representing asbestos patients for over 35 years and hails U.S. Surgeon General Benjamin’s choice to make a public statement on the dangers of asbestos during NAAW. The firm is a platinum sponsor of ADAO and supports its mission to spread awareness through education and advocacy in order to rally support around a global ban of asbestos.
