The most important thing we can do as an instructional solution is to help students accelerate their math achievement.

Pittsburgh, PA (PRWEB) April 10, 2013

The Red River Rumble is a contest that engaged students in Oklahoma against students in Texas for bragging rights of having successfully completed the most math on Think Through Math. As an incentive to complete more work, students earn points as they work on their math pathways in and outside of the classroom. There were over 5,571 schools (or campuses) in 988 districts from across the state of Texas that competed; some of them were Fort Worth, Garland, Houston, Dallas, and San Antonio.

After the month-long math competition, the score between the states was tied. With the same point total, the 1.5 million students of Texas and Oklahoma were invited into a bonus round and engaged in head-to-head math battles that promoted teamwork and, ultimately, more time doing math.

As the two states squared off in overtime, the last round revealed a clear winner. With 135,000 points to Oklahoma’s 115,000 points, TEXAS has been crowned the 2013 Red River Rumble Champion!

“I’m so proud that Texas students emerged victorious by spending so much time on the TTM system, says Clossie Ray, Direct of Texas Implementation at Think Through Math. “We know that the program helps students develop better math skills and enjoy the competition.”

During the Red River Rumble competition, the students of Texas completed over 2 million lessons, spending almost 1,600,000 hours doing mathematics. The students were so engaged in the rivalry, that they (the students) went on to do over 603,000 hours on Think Through Math during school nights and weekends.

“One of the hallmarks of Think Through Math is its ability to inspire and motivate students to do more math,” says Kevin McAliley, CEO of Think Through Math. “The most important thing we can do as an instructional solution is to help students accelerate their math achievement.”

The Red River Rumble is a part of Texas SUCCESS. Since the start of Texas Success in August, 2012 students have completed more that 200,000,000 math problems on Think Through Math. Think Through Math is the math provider of Texas SUCCESS. Texas SUCCESS provides state-funded access to interactive math and reading programs for Texas public school students in grades 3-8.

“With one of the largest Spanish-speaking populations of students in the United States, Think Through Math is uniquely positioned to support all students. Thousands of Spanish-speaking students participated in the Red River contest and benefited from their one-to-one work with our bilingual teachers online” adds Kevin McAliley.

There will be an award ceremony at the State Legislative building in May, to recognize all of the effort the Texas students put forth. For one entire year, this will serve as the “home” for the Red River Rumble trophy.

During this month long contest, there were some teachers and students that went above and beyond their abilities to help the state of Texas win the Red River Rumble. There were four classes that will be acknowledged as Red River Rumble MVP classes. These winners were a part of either the Teamwork Classroom Winners or Evening Weekend Classroom Winners.

The first set of classes were a part of Teamwork Classroom Winners, which was given to the two classes within the entire state of Texas that produced the largest percentage of students that passed at least 10 lessons during the month long competition. The two winners were:
         • Mr. Marcor, 4E, C.A. Tatum Jr. Elementary School, Dallas ISD
         • Ms. Hays, Hays Fifth Period, Eisenhower Middle School, Northeast ISD

The other two classes were a part of Evening Weekend Classroom Winners, which was given to the two classes within the entire state of Texas that produced the largest percentage of students that spent at least 50 hours during the school nights and weekends on Think Through Math, during the month long competition. The two winners were:
         • Ms. Sprinkle, S. Sprinkle Section 03, Carter Park Elementary School, Fort Worth ISD
         • Ms. Larson, Butera, Bush Elementary School, Houston ISD

Their teamwork and effort will be rewarded with a Think Through Math Party Pack, a really cool banner to hang in their school for pride and celebration as well as a TTM orange THINK Success t-shirt.
Congratulations to all of the classes and students that competed in this year’s contest. All of the 1.5 million students in Texas are winners in the eyes of Think Through Math!
