Cory Booker, Mayor of the City of Newark, NJ and one of the country’s leading empowerment activists, will deliver the keynote address at the annual Big Brothers Big Sisters of the Bay Area (BBBSBA) Gala event on Friday, April 12 at 6 p.m. This year’s theme is “Up, Up & Away,” and will honor inspirational matches and salute the power of change.

Now in its seventh year, the event enables more than 400 Bay Area corporate, community, and political leaders to come together for an evening of wine tasting, inspirational speakers, dinner, and a live auction. Proceeds from the Gala support more than 1,000 one-to-one mentoring relationships.

This year, BBBSBA will honor four inspirational matches between Bigs (mentors) and Littles (mentees). BBBSBA helps at-risk youth, ages 6-18, especially those living in communities of concentrated poverty, and those living in single parent homes. Researchers have found that Little Brothers and Sisters enrolled in BBBS Youth Mentoring Programs for 18 months or more have increased self-esteem, are less likely to skip class, less likely to begin using drugs and alcohol and less likely to use violence to settle conflicts.

Known for his leadership and bold vision, Mayor Cory Booker, will deliver an inspirational speech about the power of mentoring. Mayor Booker has been a long time Big Brothers Big Sisters advocate. In the city of Newark, Booker is leading an ambitious initiative called “ Bigs in Blue” that connects police officers and firefighters with Little Brothers and Little Sisters. Mayor Booker has also been a mentor himself.

“I know firsthand the positive impact a Big Brother or Big Sister can make in a young person’s life. A Big Brother or Big Sister provides a child with opportunity and strength. Mentoring is also a powerful tool to reduce violence and improve school performance,” said Mayor Booker. “I am excited to be in the Bay Area to honor and celebrate the life changing Big and Little mentoring relationships.”

To add to the inspirational theme of the evening, CEO of Big Brothers Big Sisters of America, Charles Pierson will talk about the importance of community partnerships.

“Big Brothers Big Sisters helps children unlock their full potential by providing them with quality mentors that care, guide, and support them. Consistent and supportive mentors can mean the difference between failure and success. We have consistent results in Little Brothers and Sisters ability to increase school attendance, improve their grades, graduate high school, and become positive productive citizens through their participation in our program. This Gala is meant to honor our most inspirational matches and show the community the positive impact BBBSBA has made in the lives of youth,” said Charles Pierson.
