A Host of New Customer Wins
Over the past two quarters, Socrata has added a host of new customers, including: the State of New York, Atlanta, Oakland, Salt Lake City, Kansas City (MO), Raleigh, Madison (WI), San Mateo County (CA), Travis County (TX), Snohomish County (WA), and Redmond (WA); as well as the Australian Capital Territory (ACT) Government, and Halifax and the Province of Alberta in Canada.
These organizations join other forward-thinking Socrata customers like New York City, Chicago, San Francisco, the State of Maryland, the State of Hawaii, the State of Washington, the World Bank, Medicare, the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, United Nations Development Programme, and the U.S. Consumer Financial Protection Bureau.
Socrata’s customers’ efforts to set the standard for open data success continue to earn them recognition and accolades from organizations like the Center For Digital Government, the National Association of State Chief Information Officers, O’Reilly Media, Fast Company, Newsweek, and The Atlantic. For example, when Atlantic Cities announced “The Best Open Data Releases of 2012,” nine of the ten were from Socrata city customers.
Open Data Goes Mainstream

The Metrics of Success
Socrata’s strategy has proven successful:
- The company’s monthly recurring revenue has grown 126 percent year over year, and 37 percent between Q4 2012 and Q1 2013.
- Socrata has retained 100 percent of its government customers, and 72 percent have upgraded or expanded to new Socrata products and offerings.
- Agency participation has accelerated and the number of datasets accessible to citizens through the Socrata platform has increased 80 percent year over year.
- Consumption of data on the company’s network has grown 215 percent during the same time period.
- Socrata currently streams 14 terabytes of data each month.
Enriching and Enhancing A Talented Team
To grow the company further, Socrata doubled its headcount, adding key resources in sales, marketing, client services and engineering; added two PhD data scientists; and opened field offices in Washington DC and London, England.
In addition, Socrata bolstered its leadership team by hiring Bill Lawler as Vice President of Sales and Joel Baller as Vice President of Public Sector.
Lawler has more than 25 years of sales management experience at technology and SaaS companies, including early leadership roles at Dell Computer and managerial positions at Apple Computer.
For his part, Baller has worked for more than a decade with executives at Fortune 1000 organizations and high-level government IT officials. Before joining Socrata, he held senior revenue producing roles at Oracle, Xerox and RightNow Technologies.
