While attorneys practicing intellectual property litigation and prosecution have been consistently in demand, the current need for transactional and corporate attorneys is relatively recent, and indicative of a recovering economy.

According to BCG recruiter Lynn Langley, firms are also eager to re-staff real estate departments which had previously been reduced during the financial slowdown. “Things are definitely turning around in the real estate industry. In my own neighborhood, I’m seeing a lot of construction, and firms need attorneys with real estate experience to work on these new deals.”
Both recruiters agree that, as the economy continues to recover, more money is being invested into purchases, mergers, acquisitions, and developments, which necessitates larger corporate, transactional, and real estate staffs to handle the increase in business.
Additionally, intellectual property attorneys have continued to remain in demand across the country, regardless of the economic climate. In Los Angeles, Langley and Hudson find that IP litigators and prosecutors with backgrounds in electrical engineering and computer science are among the most sought after attorneys.
“While IP law is always a strong area, we’re seeing a real demand for any attorney with electrical engineering experience,” says Langley. “Los Angeles has a strong technology industry, and this leads to a lot of patent work and companies suing each other over patents. We’re living in an age of technology, so I don’t think the strong demand we’re seeing will be fading any time soon.”
“When we have IP candidates with a background in electrical engineering or computer science, firms are contacting us to get in touch with them,” says Hudson. “As little as a decade ago, the attorneys working in IP didn’t have technology degrees, they were just learning as they practiced. Today, that is changing, as engineers are going back to law school. We’re seeing an element of firms trying to keep up with each other by hiring the most qualified IP attorneys.”
