Atlanta, GA (PRWEB) April 24, 2013
Through its Community Outreach and Corporate Giving program, American CyberSystems Inc. has partnered with the YWCA of Greater Atlanta since 2006 to support greater participation of young women in STEM (science, technology, engineering and math) careers in the workplace. The Fireside Chat event, sponsored by the Women’s Bureau, U. S. Department and Labor and the YWCA of Greater Atlanta, featured a panel of exceptional women in STEM careers.
The Fireside Chat event brought together successful female representatives from industry, education, government, and community organizations with young people from the community interested in STEM fields. With a Women’s History Month Theme of “Women Inspiring Innovation through Imagination: Celebrating Women in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics”, this year’s event provided a strong venue to further ACS’s mission of supporting and serving the local community.
YWCA of Greater Atlanta Interim CEO Sharmen Gowens said, “The YWCA of Greater Atlanta and the Women's Bureau US Department of Labor have collaborated for the last four years on ‘A Fireside Chat – The Story Behind the Story’, in celebration of Women's History Month… [We] have been able to bring in some of the most powerful and influential women in the Atlanta area to share their story in a conversational manner. The result is an inspired and motivated audience. Young girls leave the auditorium believing that they can and must make a difference. Others leave believing that they have a story worth sharing that might help someone else.”
Paulette Lewis, Regional Administrator of the Women's Bureau at the U.S. Department of Labor, said, “It was an inspiring evening that provided young women with valuable insights about character and contributions as well as tools and techniques to move their careers forward.”
ACS Vice President of Community Outreach and Corporate Giving Nita Sardana said, “Serving on the panel for the YWCA’s Fireside Chat was a very fulfilling experience, on both a professional and personal level. With two daughters of my own pursing STEM careers, I understand the need to provide opportunities and role models to other young women interested in STEM. Supporting events like this speak to the commitment and dedication of our entire organization to giving back to the communities we serve.”
Nita Sardana is co-owner of ACS, an Atlanta-based company which delivers information technology solutions, staffing and workforce management services to global Fortune 1000 companies across multiple industries. Nita spearheads all community engagement activities for the ACS family of companies, which include COMFORCE, HireGenics and CrossUSA. She has been actively engaged with several civic organizations in the greater Atlanta area to promote programs such as the YWCA’s Teen Girls in Technology (TGI Tech) program. Nita is also a mentor to many young teens from under-privileged backgrounds.
Other event panelists included representatives from industry, education, government and community organizations. The event was attended by young women and men from the community interested in learning more about STEM fields. Following the panel session, there was a networking event which gave panelist and other participants an opportunity to interact and exchange information.
Participation in this and other YWCA events is an important component of ACS’ Community Outreach and Corporate Giving program which serves and gives back to the communities in which ACS conducts business. Also as a part of the program, ACS provides several scholarships each year to deserving young women interested in pursuing further education in STEM fields.
