San Francisco’s Japantown district, one of only three remaining neighborhoods of its kind in the United States, has just reintroduced its upgraded website, sfjapantown.org. Funding and collaboration between the Japan Center Garage Corporation, NEW PEOPLE, and the city of San Francisco brought the project to fruition, which is part of a larger initiative to more broadly market the neighborhood.

The newly-designed website is much more conducive to serving individuals visiting the area, providing an extensive listing of restaurants, civic organizations, live parking availability and historical data. Built on a WordPress platform, the website will also be updated consistently to give locals and tourists up-to-date information on area events, festivals and even new retailers.

“Although Japantown San Francisco is a well-known destination, people are largely unaware of some of the most special experiences this neighborhood has to offer, including businesses that have been here more than 100 years,” said Richard Hashimoto, President of the Jaoantown Garage and Executive Director of the Japantown Merchants Association. “This new site highlights those ‘hidden secrets,’ while also providing a more comprehensive listing of all businesses, the history and events that celebrate our culture like our annual Cherry Blossom Festival.”

A secondary aspect of this relaunch is the introduction of a mobile site. This isn’t merely an optimized version of sfjapantown.org, but a secondary site designed specifically for mobile use. “A significant number of the visitors to Japantown are young and young families, and people are largely using their smartphones for real-time information. For us, we felt it was critical to meet that need with a user-friendly site specific to mobile use,” said Hashimoto.

This is an initial phase of the redesigned website. Additional phases will incorporate a more robust ‘deals’ section, an interactive map and expanded information on retailers and restaurants. Video will also be added as various merchants integrate their programs with the new website.

Additional information is available on the website, sfjapantown.org, as well as the neighborhood’s Facebook page.
