Of the 177 graduates of Eastern Kentucky University’s master of science in Safety, Security and Emergency Management who completed the survey, 96% stated they are currently employed in their field and 64% received a salary increase.
“From this new degree, I have had more opportunities and respect. Right before I was to graduate with this new degree, the company that had sponsored me in this education, had to have a very large lay-off, and I was one of the ones released. A few months later, I accepted a new position based on my existing education and experience, and when I told them that I had a new master’s degree, they increased my salary, substantially,” said Brian J. Phillips, recent graduate.
Other findings from the survey showed 50% of graduates were already employed in their current position prior to graduating with the degree and of those, 64% received a salary increase once they completed the MS SSEM program. Additionally, 24% of the graduates who completed the survey currently make $100,000 or more a year, 30% make between $75,000 and $99,999 a year and 27% make between $50,000 and $74,999 a year.
The most common reasons people pursue an advanced degree are personal satisfaction, to be more competitive in the marketplace, to receive a salary increase, to be promoted, or to advance in the field. When these survey respondents made the commitment to pursue a master’s degree at EKU in Safety, Security and Emergency Management (SSEM), 57% did so to advance in their field.
In the end, 87% agreed that completing this degree helped them advance in their field, 58% agreed that the degree helped them receive a promotion, 67% agreed that completing the program helped them get a salary increase and 50% agreed that the degree helped them change their career or occupation.
The survey was sent via email to 295 Eastern Kentucky University Master of Science in Safety, Security and Emergency Management degree graduates in November of 2012. Of the 295 online graduates who received the survey, 177 fully completed it.
