Two Woodard & Curran Project Win ACEC Platinum Awards

A complex environmental monitoring effort that is an essential part of the redevelopment of Ferry Point in the Bronx and an upgrade to critical systems at the Westchester Joint Water Works both won Platinum Awards from the New York chapter of the American Council of Engineering Companies.

Two projects from engineering firm Woodard & Curran won Engineering Excellence Awards from the New York chapter of the American Council of Engineering Companies. The environmental monitoring data management and web-based geographic information system (WebGIS) project for the New York City Department of Parks and Recreation’s (NYCDPR’s) redevelopment of Ferry Point in The Bronx, NY won a Platinum Award. The comprehensive supervisory controls and data acquisition (SCADA) system upgrade at the Westchester Join Water Works water treatment and distribution facility also won a Platinum Award.

Custom information management and environmental monitoring at Ferry Point Park:
The NYCDPR is redeveloping a 200-acre site on Ferry Point, a former landfill overlooking the East River, into a community park, waterfront park, and Jack Nicklaus-designed golf course. In order to ensure the multi-million dollar project is completed in an environmentally responsible manner and in compliance with New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (NYSDEC) State Pollution Discharge Elimination System (SPDES) construction permit, NYCDPR hired Woodard & Curran to act as independent environmental monitor. Woodard & Curran is responsible for inspecting the high volume of fill material imported to the site, reviewing environmental data generated by the incoming fill, performing independent erosion and sediment control inspections, and related reporting.

This process generates a tremendous amount of data, which must be readily available to NYCDPR, NYSDEC, and other project stakeholders. To accomplish this, Woodard & Curran uses a custom WebGIS to record environmental information, the location where the fill is to be used, the volume of fill, and photographs of the material and locations. Project stakeholders can log-in to the secure website to view the data in near real-time. The WebGIS also serves as a repository for all project-related documents, such as plans, maps, and reports.

Improved reliability at Westchester Joint Water Works:
Westchester Joint Water Works (WJWW) is an intermunicipal water supply agency that provides water to roughly 60,000 homes in the Long Island Sound Shore Communities in Westchester County, NY. WJWW’s (SCADA) system, which allows its operators to remotely monitor and control its water facilities to ensure it is operating effectively, was unreliable and in need of significant upgrade. WWJW hired Woodard & Curran to evaluate its existing system and design a replacement.

The new SCADA system is built on well-supported, proven technologies, making it easier to maintain, support, and expand. It has improved the reliability of remote communications made WWJW’s service more efficient, which could lower water supply costs and limit future rate increases. It also includes round-the-clock, on-call support for unexpected issues or during extreme weather.
