To capitalize on the growing market for NAND flash based storage, Indra Networks has developed compression / decompression technology optimized for Solid State Disks (SSDs). Named ZopSSD, this patent pending technology is aimed at enterprise class devices ranging from PCIe SSDs to all-flash storage arrays.
The key challenge in designing compression / decompression for enterprise SSDs is that no reduction in performance is acceptable. Previously, even the highest performance hardware compression / decompression cores were not fast enough to keep up with the performance of today's SSDs. This has delayed adoption of this technology in SSDs, even though it provides a clear value proposition in terms of cost per GB.
ZopSSD solves this by providing very high speed decompression which can be inserted in the SSD's read path in such a way that data can be accessed without any slowdown. This new technology is 10x faster than previous offerings and can run at upto 20 Gbps.
Even with dramatic drops in NAND flash prices, price of SSDs remains a barrier to adoption. ZopSSD compression technology allows more data to be stored in a given size SSD, allowing customers to save money by buying less expensive SSDs. Data stored by enterprise applications is typically compressible by 2x to 6x, leading to substantial savings.
The compression algorithm in ZopSSD is an improvement on the industry standard "deflate" algorithm. Changes have been made to support the extremely high throughput, while maintaining a reasonable compression ratio.
ZopSSD is delivered as a Verilog IP core that is ready to integrate in SSD controllers. It is available immediately for evaluation by qualified OEM customers. For further information, contact Indra Networks at firstname.lastname@example.org.
About Indra Networks
Indra Network is a pioneer in hardware compression technology. In year 2002, Indra Networks introduced the world's first hardware accelerator for compressing Web content. Later, the company developed products to compress and secure backup data. These products are typically integrated into networking or storage gear. The new ZopSSD offering is an IP core that SSD manufacturers can integrate into ASIC or FPGA based controllers.
