Virna and Cliff Hudson, owners of Fresh Coat Painters of Central Valley, were recently awarded Fresh Coat’s Franchise of the Year award at the 2013 National Conference in Ft. Lauderdale Florida. It was the third consecutive time the wife-and-husband duo had earned the distinction, which is a testament to their hard work, commitment to quality, and dedication to customer service.

Their commitment to quality and community encouraged impressive progress. The Hudsons began with three employees when they first opened their Fresh Coat business in 2008; that number has risen to nearly 20. Virna runs the residential portion, concentrating on sales and marketing, while Cliff directs the commercial portion of the business and operations. Painters, estimators, a bookkeeper, an operations manager, and foremen round out their team. Earlier this year, the couple moved from a home office into a 1,200-square-foot office and warehouse space. Virna also captured the honor of being named Entrepreneur of the Year by the Tracy, California Chamber of Commerce.

Brozek said the Hudson’s success is indicative of their overall ability to connect with clients, coupled with the strength of the painting industry.

“Virna and Cliff embody what is great about the Fresh Coat community,” he said. “They are successful themselves, and they’re always happy to help their fellow owners by providing advice based upon their vast experience.”

Painting is always an essential service,” Brozek said. “In a slow economy, people are enhancing their current homes or maybe trying to sell or simply moving into a new space. In a booming economy, people are building new homes, expanding existing ones, or simply upgrading what they have. Regardless of the situation, painting comes into play. No matter the economy, it’s always in demand.”

Aside from networking and marketing, Virna said, it’s also essential to take note of clients’ needs and provide an honest recommendation of the necessary scope of work, without the characteristic hard sales pitch. “Most clients have an idea what they want in regards to color choices but others just simply do not know and need assistance. That's where we come in and make sure we listen to what our client wants,” she said.

“When we say we will be there on time and we are. If we say a project will take two days, we deliver on that promise. We take the hassle out of painting by ensuring that our clients don't have to worry about anything except picking out their color. In most cases, our clients are not even at home while their house is being painted. They get to come home after we are finished and relax, because our painters will even clean up after we are done. The bottom line is we are not satisfied until our customer is completely 100 percent satisfied. We are fortunate to have a great staff on board who truly pride in their work,” Virna said.

“Ultimately the secret to our success is building relationships within the industry,” Cliff noted. “We’re approaching them as honest business people rather than someone just out to make money. We’re much more interested in long-term relationships.”
