McLean, Virginia (PRWEB) April 22, 2013
FrontPoint Security, a nationwide leader in wireless home security systems and long-time champion of public safety measures, has released eight helpful tips for improving home safety this Spring.
“At FrontPoint we study the habits of burglars, in order to better equip our home security systems to defeat them,” said FrontPoint Co-Founder and Senior Advisor, Peter Rogers. “We also team with organizations like the National Crime Prevention Council (NCPC) to share helpful safety information with the public. Since homes are at higher risk of being burglarized in the spring and summer months, now is the perfect time to help homeowners assess and improve their home safety level. While owning an alarm system is probably the very best way to avoid burglary, there are other simple steps you should consider.”
Tip #1 – Secure Doors and Windows
Doors are burglars’ favorite points of entry, so be sure your locks are good and your door is strong. Police recommend using at least 3” long screws for your door frames. Long-strike deadbolts make the best locks. The other simple but critical tip is to use the locks. Make sure all doors – including the door from the garage into the house – are locked whenever possible. The same guideline applies to all ground-floor windows.
Tip #2 – Add Outdoor Lighting
Outside lights make your home more secure, and less attractive to would-be intruders. Motion-activated lights are an easy way to deter burglars before they even get to your door.
Tip #3 – Landscape for Safety
While you’re giving your yard its spring cleaning, consider simple burglar-deterring ideas, such as planting prickly evergreens beneath your first-floor windows. Also, trim shrubs to remove hiding places and eliminate any tree branches that could give a burglar easy access to upper-story windows.
Tip #4 - Consider a Fence
Something as simple as a fence around your property can make the difference between a criminal choosing your house, or moving on. If you already have a fence, check to see if winter weather caused any splitting, rotting or rusting. Repair weak areas in the fence and make sure latches and locks are working properly.
Tip #5 – Take Inventory – and Serials Numbers
Simple data can help police catch criminals and improve your chances of recovering stolen property. Take pictures of your valuables and record their make, model and serial numbers. This important information will also be useful for filing insurance claims.
Tip #6 – Get Home Security – and Arm your System
Homes with security systems are three times less likely to be targeted by burglars than unprotected homes. If you don’t have a professionally monitored alarm system, consider getting one – it is a worthwhile investment. If you do have home security, make sure you keep the system armed and that your yard signs and window decals are clearly visible.
Tip #7 – Get a Security Camera
Video security cameras are increasing in popularity and use. Besides enhancing the security of your home, they provide a great way to feel connected when you’re away, and keep an eye on pets and children.
Tip #8 – Automate Your Lights and Door Locks
Home automation provides convenience and savings, on top of better security. With home automation you can control your lights and door locks remotely, from anywhere, over any internet-connected device. The more advanced security systems can integrate home automation functionality in the alarm system controls, making this one of the fastest growing areas in home security. Light Control lets you set a daily or monthly schedule and turn lights on and off from anywhere. As the interior lighting changes, the home appears occupied, which deters burglary. Turning lights off when they’re not needed will save on your energy bill and offset the cost of your monthly alarm service. Thermostat control provides even greater savings, while increasing the comfort and convenience of your home.
“Summer will be here before we know it, so secure your home now, before heading out on summer trips and vacations,” said Mr. Rogers. “FrontPoint hopes to provide peace of mind, not only by spearheading the use of safer wireless and cellular technology in today’s home security systems, but also by providing the information that homeowners need to make good decisions related to home safety.”
