Ten years ago, Studio Upstairs, a group of ten Southern California artists, was conceived as an opportunity to nourish creativity through figure drawing and to grow artistically through association with other artists. Over the years, this original concept has led to a more universal view of the necessity of art in our community and the world at large.
The artists meet weekly for three hours with a live model to draw, paint, and expand their artistic skills. A pleasant adjunct to the group’s formation has been the evolution of respect, both for each other as artists as well as friends. The creative methodology for members of the group is diverse, spanning many genres of art and media. Realism, impressionism, abstract expressionism, non-objective abstract art, color-field painting, and sculpture are examples of some of the approaches pursued by artists from the Studio Upstairs.
Several studio members have gained widespread recognition in regional art circles, as well as internationally. Their collective work, sketches, and self portraits will be on exhibit at the Huntington Beach Art Center, 538 Main St, Huntington Beach, CA, beginning with an opening reception, May 18. For more information contact Studio Upstairs or Huntington Beach Art Center.
