There's lots to love when the heart-shaped fruit is cause for celebration at the 30th Anniversary California Strawberry Festival May 18 and 19 in Oxnard. The berry best gets underway on 15 acres of parkland with more than 50 food booths, live concerts, free rides and attractions, celebrity chef demonstrations, gooey contests, 200 Arts & Crafts exhibits, a new Zip Line, and more. With proceeds benefitting Southland charities, more than $4,000,000 has sweetened the lives of others over the years, all in the name of seasonal fun.
Strawberry indulgences are unlimited with foodie fare like strawberry pizza, strawberry nachos and tamales, deep fried strawberries, strawberry popcorn, strawberry kabobs, strawberry beer, “build your own” strawberry shortcake, and standards like chocolate dipped, strawberry funnel cake, strawberry margaritas, strawberry parfaits, and more.
Things get “buggy” for the more adventurous palate when celebrity chef Bricia Lopez of the acclaimed Guelaguetza Restaurant shares her secret recipe for a savory strawberry spring salad with grasshoppers (aka: chapulines) during a culinary demonstration in the Strawberry Promenade. Kids with an appetite for fun will enjoy an interactive hand’s on experience with “make & take” edible strawberry art. And, the Berry Blast Off Recipe Contest “Strawberry Smackdown” finds two finalists competing against the clock in a head-to-head challenge to prepare the ultimate strawberry dish worthy of a grand prize cruise vacation.
Strawberryland For Kids offers an oasis for children with free rides and attractions, including the Jest in Time Family Fun Stage with ongoing puppet shows, magicians and performers. Soaring above the food court area, the new Zip Line promises to be a popular activity for all ages. Gooey, in-your-face fun, gets underway in the contest area with the Tart Toss, Pie Eating Contest and Strawberry Relay. From Latin funk, big band and jazz, to Country, Elvis, classic rock, Beatles tribute and more, two stages are alive with concerts to quench a variety of musical tastes. The Berry Best Strawberry Hat Contest, Berry Best Dressed Baby Contest, and Berry Best Dance Contest encourage fan participation.
