Study Shows Early Sound Recognition Contributes to Good Spelling Abilities in Children, eReflect Announces

A common misconception is that in order for a child to quickly learn to spell, the trick is in exposing that child to reading. However, with the following study conducted by British researchers at the University of Liverpool, it appears that sound recognition may provide a much more stable foundation for developing spelling abilities.

Ultimate Spelling developers announced the publication of this finding and the conclusion of the researchers after three years of data review was that a more efficient spelling skill was established in children when it was based on “phonological transcoding ability” - the ability to relate the sound of a word to the pattern of the letters. This in turn is what helps the learner form orthographic representations, or the specific patterns representing each sound, which in turn makes for a more succinct grasp of spelling of a word in general.

This finding certainly will come in very handy, especially for those who are in the business of teaching children how to spell. It breaks away from the traditional methods that rely on visual practice only, which, although effective as well, appear to not be as efficient as the system of presenting sound, sight, and spelling simultaneously. Schools who implement this approach will need to include vocal spelling and reading exercises, rather than the often more common large-group silent reading and spelling work.
