Institutional Investor magazine announces that David Shaw, the founder of D.E. Shaw & Co., is its 2013 Lifetime Achievement Award recipient and Bruce Zimmerman, the CEO and CIO of the University of Texas Investment Management Co., is its Outstanding Contribution Award recipient.

With the founding of D.E. Shaw in 1988, David Shaw became a pioneer in the hedge fund industry — advancing not just quantitative investing and the business of investment management but also, through his public service and contribution to science, the positive role of hedge fund managers to the broader community. He and his team at D.E. Shaw developed an entrepreneurial and creative culture that at the time was unusual for the investment management industry. After Shaw decided, in 2001, to step back from day-to-day management of the firm and devote his time to scientific research, he became a trailblazer in succession planning — finding a way for the hedge fund industry to mature beyond its founding fathers.

Bruce Zimmerman joined the University of Texas Investment Management Co. as CIO in May 2007. During an extremely difficult investment period he and his team, including deputy CIO and president Cathy Iberg, have overseen the development and expansion of one of the most sophisticated and successful hedge fund portfolios being operated by a large public endowment. Of particular note are the efforts that Zimmerman and his team have made to help fund a new generation of hedge fund talent.

Institutional Investor magazine is also proud to announce 40 investor and consultant nominees in ten award categories in its 11th Annual Hedge Fund Industry Awards. The awards recognize the hedge funds, funds of hedge funds, seeder firms, investment consultants, endowments, foundations, family offices, corporate funds, sovereign funds and public funds that stood out for their innovation, achievements and contributions to the industry in 2012, as well as Rising Stars of the industry whose individual accomplishments in, and contributions to, the industry make them standout among their peers and position them as future industry leaders.

Rising Stars will be announced next week.

All nominees will be honored and winners will be announced and awarded at a dinner and ceremony at the Mandarin Oriental in New York City on Thursday, June 27, 2013.
