“Privacy Analytics has been a great partner in providing appropriately de-identified and masked data for these teams because compliance to the HIPAA Privacy Rule is a key parameter for us as we look to make data available and encourage innovation."

Ottawa, ON (PRWEB) April 24, 2013

For 27 hours from April 24 to 26th at the 2013, CajunCodeFest 2.0 put on by the Center for Business & Information Technologies (CBIT) at the University of Louisiana at Lafayette. The 2012 event boasted 275 attendees. This year, teams featuring the best and the brightest software engineers, students, entrepreneurs and healthcare professionals will compete to create the best application to transform a provided data set into an innovative health care solution. The State of Louisiana is leading the charge to leverage available innovative technologies and analytics to find new ways to raise the ranking of Louisiana in America’s Health Rankings.

For 2013, the focus will be encouraging patients to “Own Their Own Health” and these teams will be working their innovative magic to analyze the data set to create new health care solutions that will allow patients to be engaged with their health. The core data that serves as the basis for the CajunCodeFest had to be de-identified before it could be released to the entrants in the challenge. The HIPAA Privacy Rules for safeguarding Protected Health Information (PHI) require that the likelihood of a re-identification be “very small” when data is disclosed for secondary purposes – such as the CajunCodeFest. It would not have been possible to have the coding challenge without properly de-identified data.

“Privacy Analytics has been a great partner in providing appropriately de-identified and masked data for these teams because compliance to the HIPAA Privacy Rule is a key parameter for us as we look to make data available and encourage innovation. Not only did Privacy Analytics offer up the software to do the actual de-identification, but we also appreciated the advice from its team led by Dr. Khaled El Emam who is regarded as one of a handful of individuals recognized to certify the de-identification of PHI in North America," said Lucas Tramontozzi, CTO of the Department of Health and Hospitals.

Given its successful work with the Heritage Provider Network and providing de-identified data for the Heritage Health Prize, Privacy Analytics was best suited to provide the software and certification services to de-identify the data for this competition. Privacy Analytics is the only company to offer a commercially available de-identification and masking solution which provides a risk-based methodology and tool that operationalizes the ability to de-identify data using the HIPAA Privacy Rule’s Statistical Method. It allows Protected Health Information (PHI) to be de-identified while retaining the granularity required getting optimal insight out of the data.

“The CajunCodeFest 2013 is a great example of how previously unused data can be made available to people wanting to find insights and innovations to public health issues to find new solutions, new medicines, new regimens of treatment by studying the experiences that are contained in masses of data. The focus at Privacy Analytics is to make the best quality data available to researchers while still complying with all HIPAA requirements, “said Dr. Khaled El Emam, the CEO of Privacy Analytics. Dr. El Emam is also the Canada Research Chair in Electronic Health Information at the University of Ottawa in which he leads the Electronic Health Information Laboratory team and an Associate Professor in the Faculty of Medicine.
