Think Through Math (TTM) is a Web-based math solution that personalizes instruction for students in grades 3 through Algebra I. As part of the Idaho Math Initiative, Think Through Math has been provided to schools by the Idaho State Department of Education for all public school students since 2008.
Since mid-January, the students of Sacajawea Junior High School in Lewiston have been actively participating in Think Through Math’s competition, the Fifth Annual MX3, with more than 27,565 schools nationwide.
Out of all competing schools, 195 students at Sacajawea Junior High School emerged as the national March Math Madness Champions. Fellow Idaho students from River Valley Elementary in Meridian were runners-up in this national contest.
During the contest, Sacajawea Junior High students spent 1,121 hours on Think Through Math completing 72,650 complex math problems. The junior high students completed 6,287 math lessons during the qualification and elimination rounds and logged 84 hours outside of the traditional school day, beating out all of the 27,565 schools from across the nation.
“We are proud of the work the staff and students did during this competition,” said Mr.Uhlorn, principal of Sacajawea Junior High. “Many of our 195 team members worked daily to improve their math skills using TTM. We have used this program for the past three years as a great way to have students fill in gaps of mathematical concepts with the flexibility of individual pathways. The kids were so excited to hear how we progressed throughout the competition and made it their goal to keep working hard.”
On Wednesday, May 15, between the hours of 6-8 pm, representatives from Think Through Math will host a special event at the Lewiston High School auditorium (located at 1114 9th Avenue) to recognize and reward the winning students with the “MATH” Madness trophy, banner and awards. Each student will also receive a commemorative t-shirt and certificate.
