Nestivity, a social media startup developing community software tools for Twitter, released a list of the top twenty-five brands with the most engaged Twitter audiences. These top social brands were chosen based on the results of a study conducted by Evolve Capital, Inc. and Dr. Natalie Petouhoff of the UCLA Anderson School of Management, with the intent of measuring brand engagement on Twitter. The study examined how brands cultivate relationships with customers, influencers, and advocates -- 140 characters at a time. The research (based on an analysis of Twitter traffic surrounding the 100 most followed brands) revealed data suggesting that the number of followers a brand boasts may have little to do with the level of engagement they maintain with their audience.
“Most brands have fallen into the trap of using Twitter for push marketing: broadcasting messages and expecting to influence customers with little to no listening or community building. This view of Twitter as a one-way communication tool severely limits quality interactions between brands and their customers. It is a short-sighted use of an inherently interactive communication channel,” said Nestivity founder and president Henry Min. “We wanted to identify the 25 most engaged brands on Twitter to highlight examples and best practices for how to successfully develop and grow an engaged community of followers."
The analysis, based on the InfiniGraph Engagement Analysis Platform, compared the response rate per post from February 2nd to March 5th 2013, using proprietary algorithms for determining Twitter responses, content trend scores and clicks on links and content.
The top 5 most engaged brands on Twitter, their post volume, number of followers and Klout scores are as follows:
