The Detroit-based Africa Development Group has committed to raising $100,000 this year to support critical change for the people of Liberia, West Africa.
"Our sisters and brothers in Liberia, West Africa are survivors of a 14-year civil war, which left them without food to eat, medical attention, clothing, shelter and clean drinking water—the basic needs of life," says ADG director Kojo Darden. "They desperately need our help to live."
The Africa Development Group is an all-volunteer organization founded by the Shrines of the Black Madonna of the Pan-African Orthodox Christian Church and operating in partnership with the Pan-African Orthodox Christian Church in Liberia.
PAOCC Liberia was formed when youth from the war-ravaged country reached out to the Michigan-based church for assistance. (Learn more) Church members traveled to Liberia to learn about the realities Liberian people face. "We visited the one public hospital—badly in need of hospital supplies, equipment and medical professionals," says Darden. "There wasn’t even a stethoscope."
"We met teachers who worked for free to educate as many of the people as they could. We also met the people in the villages who lived day by day off whatever they could salvage from the land."
"I felt like there was more that I could do besides studying, praying and wishing things would get better," says social worker Darden.
ADG is focused on addressing three critical areas of concern:
a) Inadequate health care. One understaffed hospital without sufficient medical supplies and equipment for millions of people.
b) The lack of schools and educational opportunity rendering the majority of the population uneducated and without opportunities.
c) The exceptionally high amount of unemployment (80-85%) resulting in a tremendous number of beggars and homeless people.
ADG funds are to be used to build and support a not-for-profit school, to provide much needed supplies and funding to the hospital, and to support farming initiatives to combat hunger and encourage entrepreneurism.
