Lean Healthcare Transformation Summit Will Examine the State of Healthcare, Offer Remedies

John Toussaint, MD, CEO of the ThedaCare Center for Healthcare Value, will give the healthcare industry a checkup in three key areas when he delivers the opening keynote at the 4th Annual Lean Healthcare Transformation Summit, June 5-6, in Orlando, Fla.

Dr. Toussaint will discuss how healthcare providers are doing in their efforts to:

  • Design the delivery of care around patients by applying lean management principles
  • Develop new payment systems based on patient outcomes rather than fee-for-service
  • Make treatment quality and cost transparent so patients have the information needed to make decisions about their care and where to get it

“I’ll talk about where the state of the industry is on those three issues, which are what we focus on here at the Center,” said Dr. Toussaint, who founded the nonprofit Center in 2008 after eight years as president and CEO of ThedaCare.

Lean Lessons Learned
More than 500 healthcare leaders are expected at the Summit, hosted by the ThedaCare Center for Healthcare Value and the nonprofit Lean Enterprise Institute.

“This will be our fourth year co-hosting the Summit, and I’m really looking forward to the agenda,” said Dr. Toussaint. “This Summit brings together hundreds of healthcare professionals dedicated to care redesign with less waste and fewer errors. It’s a great way to meet people and build relationships with the industry‘s best thinkers and innovators.”

The two-day conference, which offers continuing education credits, will feature keynotes by high-profile thought leaders, breakout sessions on practical applications of lean principles, pre-Summit workshops for building skills, and a CEO panel reporting on the latest experiments to improve healthcare through lean principles.

“The Summit’s approach is to expose attendees to the most advanced thinking by having leaders present what they have learned from doing real work each day,” said Dr. Toussaint. “Many of the Healthcare Value Network members will share lessons learned on these topics. And many of the highest performing organizations in North America will be at the Summit this year. We all will be learning from world-class presenters.” Established in 2009 with 14 original members, the Healthcare Value Network now unites leaders at more than 50 healthcare organizations through peer-to-peer learning experiences inside operating healthcare facilities.

Healthcare Cost and Quality
During his keynote, Dr.Toussaint also will report on what he has learned over the past several years during visits to 120 healthcare organizations in 12 countries. He summarized his findings during a recent webinar:

  • Most healthcare work processes are in chaos
  • Very little standard work is practiced
  • When problems happen, there is no way to identify and solve them immediately
  • Leadership is autocratic and not engaged at the frontline
  • Most leaders can’t see waste in processes

“I realized we all have the same problem around the world—the cost is too high and the quality is not reliable,” said Dr. Toussaint. “That’s exactly what the Lean Healthcare Transformation Summit will address.”

Keynote and Breakout Sessions
In addition to Dr. Toussaint, lean healthcare leaders delivering keynotes are:

  • Paul O‘Neill of Value Capture, the former CEO of Alcoa who led Alcoa to be the safest company in the world, has a powerful story to tell about the cultural side of transformation and how leaders must act differently if they expect to build an improvement culture.
  • Jim Womack is the foremost expert in the world on the study of lean management. He will share what he is learning about the leadership and management systems required to affect transformational change.
  • Francois de Brantes created Bridges to Excellence, the first redesigned payment system rewarding value creation. He now is building the measurement system CMS will use to change Medicare payments to reward value.
  • Featured CEO is Alan Gleghorn of Christie Clinic, along with a panel including Don Shilton of St. Mary‘s General Hospital and Alan Aviles of New York City Health and Hospital Corporation.
