Food4Patriots Responds to Recent Food Recalls with Recommendation to Stockpile Food for Emergencies

Food recalls – both voluntary and those requested by government agencies including the USDA and FDA – are so numerous that the government has a website to keep track of them and inform the public. Food4Patriots suggests keeping good foods frozen or freeze-dried in case the situation worsens.

In a recent seven-day period (April 16-22, 2013), six different food recalls were announced on the U.S. government’s food safety website. They include Prime Food USA’s herring and salmon fillets (possible listeria contamination), Go Max Go Foods’ vegan candy bar products (dairy-free labeling), and Cedarlane Natural Foods’ black bean enchiladas (undeclared milk content).    

Food4Patriots, the supplier of emergency food suitable for long-term storage, survival and emergency preparedness, believes that an unanticipated crisis could result in food shortages, higher food prices and poorer food quality. The company will be launching soon to help people be prepared for an emergency situation.

In the meantime, Food4Patriots has nine recommendations for people who want to save money at the supermarket:

  •     Watch for sales on non-perishables and foods that can be frozen, then stock up with six to eight weeks’ worth of those items to be stored at home.
  •     Use manufacturer and store coupons, but only on items that would have been purchased anyway.
  •     Utilize in-store flyers that can sometimes provide an even lower price than a sale.
  •     Don’t neglect the top and bottom rows in grocery store aisles. That’s where many of the best deals can be found.
  •     Take a calculator to the supermarket. It will help determine the best price on different-sized items.
  •     Avoid impulse buys, which are usually found throughout the path from the front door to the cash register. Stick to the list.
  •     Buy unsliced lunch meats and cheeses in the refrigerated aisle rather than sliced meats and cheeses at the deli counter. Savings could be up to 50 percent.
  •     Eat leftovers for lunch the following day. A reheated bowl of beef stew costs nothing, but lunch in a restaurant will usually run around $10.
  •     Grow vegetables and fruit in a garden and use them in various meals. They will probably be tastier and more nutritious than store-bought food.
