Non-Profit Aids At-Risk Dogs and At-Risk Youth

[Pawsitive Works] will have enough ThunderShirts on-site to help train dogs within their program for an entire year.

Durham, NC (PRWEB) April 30, 2013

Committed to creating effective, easy-to-use pet anxiety and stress solutions for pet parents, as well as supporting animal shelters and rescue groups nationwide, ThunderWorks Founder Phil Blizzard recently announced a significant donation to the Idaho-based non-profit, Pawsitive Works™.

“They’ll have enough ThunderShirts on-site to help train dogs within their program for an entire year,” Blizzard said. “We’ve always supported shelters across the country, either financially or through product donations. We were drawn to this specific cause because of the unique link between the at-risk dogs, and the at-risk youth.”

At Pawsitive Works™, hard to adopt shelter dogs are partnered with at-risk youth for a five-week behavior modification program. Together, the pair maneuvers through and gains understanding of the issues facing them in life while developing better ways to cope and address challenges. The program emphasizes teaching youth empathy, self-confidence, patience, communication and mindfulness, which are all needed assets to help the youth stay out of trouble as well as becoming more productive members of society. The program is also committed to teaching dogs positive behaviors, common commands such as sit, down and stay.

“Since 2009, the results from our program have been extremely successful,” said Pawsitive Works™ Executive Director Karen Schumacher. “In addition to supporting the adoption of these dogs, we’ve found that more than 98% of youth stay out of trouble during our program as well. We’re truly shaping both ends of the leash!”

Any family who wishes to adopt a dog through this program is asked that no matter what stage the dog is in during the program, that he be able to finish with his at-risk youth partner.

“It’s such an accomplishment for this kids to turn over a dog they worked closely with, and helped find a home,” Schumacher said. “We’re very grateful to ThunderShirt for their generous donation, and know that these ThunderShirts will really help our dogs, who are commonly anxiety-ridden and overactive, find their forever home.”

With its patent-protected design, the ThunderShirt’s gentle, constant pressure has a dramatic calming effect that has already helped tens of thousands of dogs with anxiety problems. The product is also used and recommended by vets and trainers worldwide. Anxiety experts believe that pressure has a calming effect on the nervous system and may release calming hormones like endorphins or oxytocins.

“With the ThunderShirt, anyone can effectively, naturally and easily treat anxious dogs,” said Blizzard. “We know that many negative behaviors such as uncontrollable barking, chewing, severe panting and more are all symptoms of anxiety, and it’s often those behaviors keeping that dog from getting adopted.”

The company has donated thousands of ThunderShirts to shelters nationwide since 2009, and in fact last year the product was recognized with the first-ever “Petfinder Seal of Approval”, which extends the trust and authority of the Petfinder name to products, services, brands and initiatives that have met specific pet-friendly criteria.

The ThunderShirt for Dogs is available in sizes XXS to XXL, and is sold in Heather Grey, Blue Polo and Pink Polo. Additionally, the company offers the ThunderShirt for Cats in sizes S, M and L. Suggested retail starts at $39.95. Both products can be personalized with custom embroidery for an additional charge.
