Steely Dan appeared on the music scene in 1972, after Bard College students and friends Donald Fagen and Walter Becker form the band based on their love of jazz, blues and literature. They take their name from the William S. Burroughs novel Naked Lunch and release their first album Can't Buy a Thrill. During the 1970s, the band took on and lost members, touring the United States and Britain In 1975, the band is reshaped again, and Fagen and Becker record with individual session musicians, the result of which yielded several albums, Katy Lied, The Royal Scam, Aja, and Gaucho. In 1980, the band parted ways, with Fagen releasing his first solo album, The Nightfly, which hit platinum in both the United States and United Kingdom. Fagen worked as a songwriter for singers like Diana Ross, and in 1993, released his Grammy-nominated second solo album Kamakiriad. That same year, Steely Dan reunited and went on tour. In 2000, Two Against Nature arrived, their first album in 20 years, followed by 2003's Everything Must Go. The Everything Must Go marked a beginning of a focus on small tours in 2006 to 2008 and 2011's Shuffle Diplomacy.
