A recent survey done by BizReport and studied by Think Big Online shows that Australian businesses are using social media more and more. The need for social media marketing, especially among new and mid-sized businesses, has become a vital component of building a customer base. According to a survey commissioned by BizReport and done by Bibby, an Australian financial services firm, 65% of businesses surveyed have indicated that social media has helped their business grow within the last year.
Social media allows businesses to get more engagement with their customers, an important aspect of marketing that many businesses overlook. It’s not enough to simply get a message out there. “If you are not getting any interaction or engagement from your target audience,” says Think Big Online founder Samuel Junghenn, “it could mean that your business isn’t actually getting the attention it needs to stand out.”
Over the past year, businesses have used social media to acquire and engage with new customers, generate new sales, and network. A third of the businesses surveyed said they used social media as a way of improving their customer service. By engaging customers directly through social media, companies are able to focus their marketing strategies and develop innovative ways of marketing that are not possible with traditional marketing forms.
The increase in use of social media shows that it’s more than just a passing fad. Facebook, Twitter, Google+, Pinterest, and the many other social media sites show that 2013 is the year of social media. While younger entrepreneurs are more likely to use social media than older businessmen and women, the survey reported that 39% of those over age 40 had begun using social media. That trend is likely to continue in the coming years as more and more businesses embrace this new form of marketing and begin to think outside the box.
