A Midlands based company, Arctic Spas, advertised available apprenticeship positions locally, and ultimately sourced apprentices through Stourbridge College in accounting, warehousing, and distribution. The company's apprentices are on their way to achieving National Vocation Qualifications, at which point they will move into more senior positions within the company or receive assistance to go to college to further their skills.
“Arctic Spas believes in these youngsters,” says David Martin, Vice President of European Operations for Arctic Spas, and a passionate proponent of young people who seek apprenticeships in the unstable economic climate of the 21st century. “If you give them the right guidance, they will return more than you could ever anticipate.”
As mentioned in a BBC article almost a year ago, England conducted a review of the state of apprenticeships in order to ensure that the programs and services that deliver apprenticeship training are giving people the training and skills needed to excel in the workforce. For Arctic Spas and many other industries throughout the country, the success of apprenticeship programs is unarguably successful.
“When you employ an apprentice, it allows you to see where they fit into your operation as the education they receive can be tailored to suit your business,” says Martin.
For employers and employees, the mutual benefits of apprenticeships are palpable. These benefits are receiving increasing amounts of attention in popular media. April has seen aerospace apprentices invited to visit parliament following the introduction of a government and business partnership strategy towards the success of the aerospace industry. The BBC has also incorporated apprenticeships into its human resources endeavors, with an aim “to produce 100 highly skilled, experienced and employable graduate level apprentices over eight years to meet the growing demands of the industry.”
