Pedestrians in New York City are most often hit while walking in a crosswalk with the traffic signal on their side. According to an April 2 report in The New York Times, a study conducted by the NYU's Langone Medical Center, also found that a disproportionate number of bicyclists are hit by taxicabs and that overweight pedestrians are more protected in the event of pedestrian accidents. Between December 2008 to June 2011, the group studied more than 1,400 pedestrians and bicyclists treated at Bellevue Hospital Center after collisions. The Times reports that a majority of these accidents had occurred in Manhattan and west Brooklyn.
According to the article, the NYU report focuses on patients as opposed to other studies on pedestrian safety that have focused on the frequency, location and timing of accidents. The Times states that data for NYU's findings was obtained through victim self-reporting shortly after a crash combined with medical records and accounts from witnesses and first responders. Here are some of the study's key findings:
-About 8 percent of both pedestrians and bicyclists were injured while using an electronic device.
-40 percent of injured bicyclists were hit by taxicabs compared to 25 percent of pedestrians.
-More than 80 percent of bicyclists rode with traffic flow, but less than 30 percent wore helmets.
-6 percent of pedestrians were injured while on a sidewalk.
This study shows that pedestrians and bicyclists are not completely safe in the Big Apple, says New York personal injury lawyer Kenneth A. Wilhelm. "Pedestrian and bicycle accidents often result in devastating injuries such as head trauma, spinal cord damage and broken bones. It is important for pedestrians, bicyclists as well as motorists to remember they share the roadway and exercise caution constantly."
"Studies such as this one remind us about the dangers we face while traveling in the city," Wilhelm said. "An accident or a collision can happen in seconds. As motorists, pedestrians or bicyclists, it is crucial that we pay attention to the road and make sure that we are taking the necessary precautions to prevent tragic accidents."
