Berkeley Heights, NJ (PRWEB) May 08, 2013

Three Summit Medical Group physicians have contributed to a May 2013 Journal of Asthma article on the respiratory health of children exposed to the World Trade Center disaster.

Summit Medical Group pediatrician, Pauline A. Thomas, M.D., FAAP, is co-author of Respiratory Health of 985 Children Exposed to the World Trade Center Disaster: Report on World Trade Center Health Registry Wave 2 Follow Up, 2007-2008. J Asthma. 2013; 50(4):354-363. Summit Medical Group allergists and immunologists, Kerry S. LeBenger, MD, FAAAAI, FACAAI, and Gary Pien, MD, PhD, FAAP, FAAAAI, are also acknowledged for their guidance on use of World Trade Center Health Registry data in assessing asthma-like illness.

Dr. Thomas and her colleagues examined findings of associations of lower respiratory symptoms with exposures to particles generated during and after the collapse of the World Trade Center towers. The authors demonstrated an association between respiratory symptoms and World Trade Center dust exposures "long after [the] exposures occurred." The authors also believe that inhaling enough particles and irritants might result in lung damage that could cause bronchitis accompanied with wheezing or an asthma-like condition.

Drs. Thomas, LeBenger and Pien practice at the Group’s 1 Diamond Hill location.

A product of Informa Healthcare, the Journal of Asthma is a peer-reviewed medical journal publishing clinical research on asthma and related conditions.
