LGBT organization Gay Men of African Descent (GMAD) supports the recent announcement by NBA player Jason Collins coming out as a proud gay man. This is a major step forward—and a real game changer—for the visibility and contributions of the LGBT community and communities of color. GMAD applauds Mr. Collins for his courage in revealing a personal journey that will have a profound impact well beyond the basketball court. This watershed moment comes at a time of national debate on LGBT issues by all levels of government, as well as substantial progress on LGBT rights in our courts and the court of public opinion.
As an organization that provides wellness and mental health services to gay men of color, GMAD has witnessed many who have struggled with making their own coming out declarations, and we hope the proclamation by Mr. Collins will encourage them to do the same. In addition, GMAD believes this is a great opportunity for communities, especially those of color, to actively discuss Mr. Collins’ announcement, and come to a better understanding and acceptance of their own family members, friends and neighbors. Jason Collins has broken barriers in the sports world—but when it comes to fully embracing our LGBT brothers and sisters, it’s up to all of our communities to grab the ball and get into the game.
