The 100th birthday of the American Cancer Society (ACS) was celebrated today with a reaffirmed commitment for the fight against cancer by organising the 8th edition of the “Taste of Hope” fundraiser in New York. The annual charity event aimed at raising $175,000 for the good cause, whilst hosting eager donors and philanthropists that could savour culinary specialities provided by the cities top-end chefs and tasting delectable fine Italian wines, which again were provided by Vinitaly International, the ambassador for Italian wines.
Kris Kim, Chief Operating Officer of the American Cancer Society from New York said, "We couldn't be more delighted to welcome the Vinitaly Family and their Italian Wine Producers at Taste of Hope. Their support just reinforces that the fight against cancer is a global movement, and that when it comes to finishing the fight, there are no boundaries."
It’s no secret that Stevie Kim, Managing Director of Vinitaly International, is the sister of Kris Kim. According to her, “We may not always see eye to eye on many things, but when it comes to Taste of Hope, no discussion whatsoever.” Vinitaly International’s special relationship with the high-society charity campaign is now going into its third year and continues to be strongly supported by the Italian wine community as seventeen winemakers donated their wines. Their devotion to the cause is reflected in their statements:
The owner of Terredora winery, Daniela Mastroberardino said that: “Taste of Hope is a contribution for building a better life for us and our families. Cancer must be definitely left behind. It is necessary to fight all together against it. I am very proud that Terredora Di Paolo wines can help in this battle especially in memory of Lucio Mastroberardino and all our beloved that have passed away.”
Alberto Lusini, who oversees the American sales and marketing for Mezzacorona, Italy's largest producer of Pinot Grigio and Chardonnay, is proud to return to the 2013 edition because, “Mezzacorona is not only a company; it represents a family, as well as thousands of families of our farmers and our collaborators, in Italy and all over the world. We do what families would do; we stay together and help each other. This event represents a chance to stay closer to those we might not know personally, but we understand what they have to go through. Mezzacorona will join with the American Cancer Society and the other supporters to show that we can fight this battle together and we invite everybody to join us on May 2nd at this special event.”
According to Marilisa Allegrini of Allegrini estates, which is known for its Amarone from Veneto: "Many lives and families have been touched by cancer and my own family in this regard is no exception - we support the fight against this disease, so that our children may have a brighter future."
Matteo Lunelli from the fine sparkling winery Cantine Ferrari said that: “The incredible results of scientific research in recent years let us be optimistic about being on the right path in the fight to this terrible disease. We just need further efforts in terms of funding that are dedicated to the world’s best talents in science.”
Casa Vinicolo Zonin, one of the leading Italian sparkling wine brands in the USA, issued a statement saying that, "After our efforts to support breast cancer research, we are proud to be part of "Taste of Hope".
The fine Italian Wineries that donated wines for this edition were: Casa Vinicola Zonin, Mezzacorona, Zenato, Allegrini - Corte Giara, Castello Banfi, Cantine Ferrari, Santa Margherita, Gruppo Italiano Vini, Terredora, Casa Vinicola Sartori, Bertani, Planeta, Feudi Greco di Tufo, Bottega Vinaia, Fontanafredda, Rocca delle Macie, Mandrarossa Fiano.

About the Taste of Hope:
Taste of Hope® was founded in 2005 by the American Cancer Society. They created this fundraiser as a way to celebrate New York dining, while raising funds to help underwrite the ACS’s mission to fight for every birthday threatened by every cancer in every community. Between the early 1990s and 2005, they have seen a 15 percent decrease in the overall cancer death rate, which means they have helped to avoid about 650,000 cancer deaths and created the potential for more birthday celebrations.
